Oh no, not again! The folks at the Farmers’ Almanac, who were spot on about last winter’s brutal weather, are predicting another bitterly cold, snowy winter for the Lower Hudson Valley and the rest of the Northeast.
So while you’re enjoying these last gorgeous days of August, be sure to take a few minutes to check the levels on your oil tank and start making calls for another cord of firewood.
In case you forgot, 23 eastern states experienced one of their Top 10 coldest Februarys on record, as predicted by the Farmers’ Almanac around this time last year. And other forecasters are saying that this year's El Niño could increase the likelihood of more stormy weather this winter.
For the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states this winter, the just-released 2016 Farmers’ Almanac says it will be stormy with a good deal of snow. The editors are “red-flagging” the second week of January and the second week of February for particularly bad winter weather, along with an extended spell of stormy weather through much of the first half of March. Make your resort reservations accordingly.
Well, actually, these same editors kind of blew it when, in early June, they predicted a sweltering summer for us. Sure, we've had a few dog days here and there, but overall we've had mostly swell weather these last couple of months.
Their winter forecast for most of the rest of the country is not so dire.
Near-normal winter temperatures are predicted for central parts of the country, including Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, the western and central Great Lakes, the upper peninsula of Michigan and most of the Great Plains.
Texas and other south central states will see a cool to cold winter, but nothing extreme, according to the Farmers' Almanac. Milder than normal weather is predicted for the Rockies, southwest states, and the Pacific Northwest.
